Elvis' influence on America is apparent even long after his death. Elvis is everywhere: in the proliferation of Elvis impersonators, biographies, articles, web pages, even classes about him. Many commercials, movies, and contemporary writing allude to Elvis. He had an huge impact on our society, not only musically but also culturally, sexually, and of course, in fashion. Elvis died on August 16, 1977, yet in 1999 visitors still flock to Graceland. Consumers still buy his records and fanatics still give a new meaning to the word "obsession". While we can never say whether the musical and cultural revolutions of the 1950s and 1960s would have happened without Elvis, we do know that he had and still has an incredible influence on us. He seems to live on, whether in spirit or, according to some, something more. Why else would there be such a cult following that believes he is still alive? Elvis impersonators are perhaps the most obvious way in which Elvis still lives in our culture. They are not just limited to Las Vegas, but rather are all over the country, and the world. Though most impersonators use the 1970s Vegas Elvis for their acts, some also bring back the vibrant 1950s image. The standard Elvis costume, however, consists of a colorful jumpsuit, a dark head of hair and big sideburns, large sunglasses, jewelry, and a scarf.
